Popular Nigerian singer, Timaya, recently shared how his controversial personality nearly derailed his music career in its early stages. In an interview with Channels TV, the “Dem Mama” crooner admitted that his rebellious behavior was initially a calculated strategy to attract attention. However, the media’s intense focus on his actions pushed things to a breaking point.

Timaya recalled facing harsh criticism, with many people labeling him as “crazy” due to his antics. He explained that the media, especially newspapers at the time, would publish stories that fueled public debate about him for days. “The press took it too far; they wanted to kill me,” Timaya noted, describing how his face would even appear in newspapers used to wrap food like suya, prolonging the public’s scrutiny.

He attributed some of his behaviour to his roots as a Port Harcourt boy, acknowledging that he was one of the few figures stirring controversy at the time. Following the backlash, he rebranded and reshaped his public image.

  1. I remember his ordeal. I remember how no one wants to hear his name in PH then. In 2006, I and some friends went for his show in Asaba at GrandHotel. I can remember how young i was and that was my first adventure. The event turned out bad because some cult group do not want him to perform:so I heard. We heard sound of gunshots , we scattered allover the place and took cover. After that day i vowed never to attend such show ever.

After all said, i am glad he turned out well. They cant stop his shine; he was born to win. Regardless, he is a brave man.

Thanks Emdee for always keeping us informed.
