Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka, second-seed, defeated Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova to win their second Grand Slam trophy as a team at the Australian Open.
The 22-year-old Sabalenka who intends to focus more on the singles dominated winning the duo 6-2, 6-3.
“Its been a tough couple of weeks so thank you to everyone involved. Glad to have fans back”, the Belgian, Mertens said alongside Sabalenka; Belarusian after defeating the third-seeded Czech team at the Rod Laver Arena.
Their opponent Krejcikova and Siniakova in 2018 won the Wimbledon and French Open Women’s doubles title before losing their present fourth round of the Australian Open semifinals.
“I feel like it’s a little bit more stress (playing singles and doubles) in the Grand Slams. I just want to focus on singles and manage my energy”, Sabalenka said on the furtherance of her career.
“Still when you go out for doubles, you are still there for competing, to out everything you have- sometimes it’s not really working well with me. I just want to save it for singles, try something different this year and see what happens in the Grand Slams”, she annexed.
