The first Lagos City Marathon race was held successfully in Lagos. A Kenyan, Abraham Kipton won the race in the male category while Halima Kayo, an Ethiopian won in the female category...Emmanuel Gyan

The first Lagos City Marathon race was held successfully in Lagos. The competition, which was sponsored by Access Bank saw Abraham Kipton, a Kenyan athlete, as the winner in record time of 2 hours, 16 mins, 21 seconds. Kipton was rewarded with the sum of $50,000 for winning the tournament.

There were 20,000 participants, both local and international; 23 Kenyans, 14 Ethiopians, 1 Eritrean, etc. 


The first Nigerian to cross the finished line was Emmanual Gyang from Plateau State of Nigeria and he earned N1 million for that. He is the 7th in the overall. Also, the first Nigerian female to cross the finish line is from Plateau. 


Halima Huseen Kayo of Ethiopia got $50,000 for emerging the first female to finish the race.  

The atthletes took off from the National Stadium Surulere and went through Anthony to the Ikoyi and then to the finsh line in Eko Atlantic City where the award ceremony was held. 


Some were said to have fainted on the way but were promptly attended to by the medical team.



the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode was both at the Starting line and the finish line to grace the marathon. Others who joined him at the Closing ceremony were  Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai, Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, a Cameroon national, current President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).

Olamide and other notable musicians were there to entertain the athletes and spectators. 

Plans for the 2017 edition has already commenced and it is expected that there will be more participants.
